To be? Or Not To Be?... Normal that is!
As I was reading a friends blog, I was struck with the question, What is everyone's obsession with NORMAL?
Normal and Average, two sides of the same coin, and yet so many people are adamant that they either are or are not normal or average.
Most people I know want to be normal, mostly because ab-normal seems so. . . Well bad. And yet at the same time these same people would describe themselves as amazing, exceptional, terrific, fabulous, . . . You get the point, anything but average.
The thing is, both normal and average are descriptive words that explain the majority of any given population. Remember high school math, and the Bell curve (the curve of a normal distribution of a general characteristic in a population), no entity can be in the 0 percentile, and no entity can be in the 100 percentile. The values for the 50 percentile are calculated by what the largest number of entities fall into.
So, with Progress being what it is, I am perfectly normal when it comes to computers, but had my mum have the same computer skills when she was my age, she would have been considered to be a prodigy. Likewise, If some exceptional person from the 18th century was brought in to our time, they would probably be considered to be below average, due to the fact that they would not have the skills necessary to survive in our time.
My point is, that most of us are average, and normal, in relation to the general characteristics of our population. And at the same time, we are exceptional, amazing, unique, fabulous individuals that are a product of our times, in relation to those who went before to pave the way for this time in evolution.
So from one Normal, Average, Exceptional Person to another,
HAVE A FABULOUSLY NORMAL DAY.
